BUCKNER!!!

With all the errors that have took place in this postseason so far, I figured we could revisit the most FAMOUS World Series error in baseball history.

Most of you probably already know the story, but just in case someone without the baseball erudition reads this, here is the setup...

October 25, 1986
The Red Sox are World Series winless for the 68th consecutive year, and are in the 10th inning with a chance to end the curse*. The Red Sox were leading by 2 with 2 outs, but after a few hits and a wild pitch the score is now tied. All the Sox have to do now is end the inning and go back to work at the plate, as their offense was the more potent of the two.

That is when it happened.

Mookie Wilson comes to the plate and hits a routine ground ball towards first base. Buckner readies himself to field the ball, and then watches it go directly through his legs and into the outfield. Ray Knight comes out for the Mets and scores the winning run. The Red Sox then go on to drop Game 7, lose the series, extend the curse and forever be known for the worst error in history. It happened this week 23 years ago, but will be forever remembered. Enjoy!

*The "curse" refers to the curse of the Bambino. In 1918, the Red Sox sold Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees. Until that point the Red Sox were the most successful baseball franchise, and won the World Series that year. After trading Babe Ruth the Red Sox fell off and went 84 years without a WS win, until breaking the streak in 2004. The Yankees in that time won 26 WS championships, more than any franchise in baseball.
